OK, So I'm sure that this has been posted before, but my limited brain doesn't remember...

I'm interested in which studio release is the favorite of the group. Anyone who replies until, say, Thursday, will be included in a rollup that I will do.

I'm going to start, My favorite commercial studio Dead album (see, I still say Album) is "Blues for Allah."

Stag..

blues for allah,

and funnily enough wake of the flood.

Almost like go to heaven and Mars Hotel. Some great songs.

Haven't listened to shakedown street in years, (nor will I)though the additional tracks on the re release get the odd airing.

I'm with most of those thus far:

American Beauty (#1 if you have to have one)
Workingman's Dead
First album
Aoxomoxoa
Anthem of the Sun

The remaining I simply don't listen to enough to rank. I don't even own any post 72 in a form I can listen to now (ie, I have a few as LPs but that's it).

Well, I figured it was the right thing to do...my last post was in the middle of the melt down when I asked if a cheap son-of-a-bitch like me should stay or go since I wasn't ever going to pay for this sort of internet fun, and clearly they needed a little $, etc., etc., etc. Thus, felt it would be inappropriate to show up now and continue to parasitize the family biz without offering any financial support.

No big deal, just thought I would stick to my one principle (cheapness).

I am compiling into Excel. I know, I'm a geek. I'll post the follow up, but when should I close? I've only got 17 or so actual responses. The Scot dismisses me as trivial.

All that I know is that I find this interesting. We've so many divergent tastes, that span the entire career. Look, currently, there's a tie between the first album and AB. It appears that the earlier grouping holds sway right now. Aside from one mention of Built (which I particularly like for the Brent contribution) the latest official studio release (non-compilation) is Blues for Allah. The real reason that I chose BFA is that I feel they gelled as musicians at this point, and that they'd gotten to the point where whatever they chose to create, they could do so, not just by studio wizardry, but by true artistry.

I think that One from the Vault simply blows me away each time I hear it, and listen to it more than probably any live release (official or unofficial).

I'm surprised that Terrapin wasn't chosen by anyone so far, but we definitely, as a group, tend towards the earlier material.

So, back to the point... When do we collectively want to hear the final tally? Do we want to have all the usual suspects chime in, or is the prevailing opinion that this is another useless waste of time and bits?

How are you defining latest studio official release? Don't Shakedown & Go to Heaven fall after Blues? Are these 'compilation' because they contain previously released tunes?

Shakedown and Go To Heaven do in fact fall after Blues. All that I'm saying is that no one has chosen them.

Following is the discography I found for specific choices:

Album Release Year
Grateful Dead 1967
Anthem of the Sun 1968
Aoxomoxoa 1969
Live Dead 1969
Workingman's Dead 1970
American Beauty 1970
Skull and Roses 1971
Europe '72 1972
Bear's Choice 1973
Wake of the Flood 1973
Mars Hotel 1974
Blues for Allah 1975
Steal your Face 1976
Terrapin Station 1977
Shakedown Street 1978
Go To Heaven 1980
Reckoning 1981
Dead Set 1981
In the Dark 1987
Dylan and the Dead 1988
Built to Last 1989
Without a Net 1990
Infrared Roses 1991
So Many Roads 1999

Though, of course, Reckoning, Dead Set, and Without a net as well as D&D are live recordings. But, if you're going to place "Live Dead" in the list, then the others should be there too. Where's Long Strange Trip? I tried to exclude "greatest Hits" type albums. Again, Bear's Choice is sort of a greatest hits album. Also, you could probably discount Infrared Roses as a collage, and not specifically a studio release.

So, all that rambling, and banality aside, I'd included 'em all.

I'm trying to go by the number 1 desert island pick for studio. I'd start another listing for all time desert island favorite shows, but I know that the the Glasgow lad will bite me a new one.

By the way, my skin is far thicker that I let it sound like it is. Rob, I've always liked your posts, and often agree. I'm far less the writer. Technical, I'm usually sound, but artistic rarely. In fact, it's a lot like my guitar playing. I can read, but I can't improvise. Thorn in the side...

I have always believed that a preposition is something you should never end a sentence with.

the cover art is truely appalling, as is my spelling.

best cover has to be blues for allah, as a spotty teenager in rural england I brought a bookof rock covers, and out of all of them it was blues for allah that blew my mind, even more so than blind faith(!) That cover got me into the Grateful Dead, i bought workingmans dead the next day as it was the only one my local record shop had and the rest as they say is history (Took me another 5 years to get a copy of Blues for Allah

Hey, you know (you do don't you?) that I have no issue with you whatsoever and was pretty much indulging in mischief-making. (I really do need to borrow Tell's tongue-in-cheek emoticon.)

I'm really not that sound artistically myself (technical leaves something to be desired too), and as far as guitar playing goes I'm pretty much the opposite to you - can't read a damn note and have to improvise pretty much everything. Just like life really, winging it day to day, and some days I come crashing to the ground.

Oh yes - and on a point of information, I'm not from Glasgow.

On his first day at Harvard a young man from Arkansas approached a couple of cocky New England Socialites. 'Hey, y'all, where's the library at?' One replied haughtily, 'At Harvard, we prefer not to end a sentence with a preposition.' The young man thought for a moment, and said, 'Okay. Where's the library at, asshole?'

I know. I really was just noting that this was the first time you'd taken it upon yourself to single me out for a rant. The skin, like the belly, and maybe like the skull for that matter is thick.

While never having been to the Highlands, or the Lowlands for that matter, I do often enjoy a nice single malt (or three). I like Glen Garioch (when I can justify the cost). Never could tolerate Oban, though. It hits the taste buds on the back of my tongue like biting on tin foil.

Glen Garioch is a nice one (impress your friends by pronouncing it correctly - it's Glen 'Geery'). I think Oban is just about ok (I visited the distillery there once). The one I've never had much time for is Glenfiddich - just bland.

Damn, that is a good one; haven't had the albums out in sooo long. Is he (jester/thoughtful skeleton) on the back of Terrapin?

Between all the posters and album artwork, the boys and friends (esp Mouse/Kelley) certainly amassed a substantial body of work.

BTW, on the emoticons, I would happily transfer the "secret" to my emoticon prowess, but if it weren't for Arb and TigerB, I'd have no such abilities, and frankly, it is beyond my highly limited techno skills to even consider how I could pass it along...

Besides, I am not sure "emoticon" and "Rob" go together in the same post. Might be close to the "matter" and "antimatter" combustable issue another famous Scot was always going on about ("Cap'n! I can't hold her together much longer!").

As Dire recognised - it's from the cover of the Workingman's/American Beauty songbook that came out in (I think) 1973.

Thank you for the offer re emoticons, but I'll pass up on the temptation. I think if I were to start peppering the pithy posts with pixellated popart it would be like the ravens gathering for Ragnarok - the world's end would be hot upon its heels.

can't possibly scroll thru all this fol-der-ol to see if it's been mentioned already, but my pick--at great risk of incurring rob's wrath for having responded to the question at all--is WAKE OF THE FLOOD.

So many great faves on one nice release.

#2-MARS HOTEL
#3- BLUES FOR ALLAH.

and, for the hell of it, A NEW TOPIC: my FAVORITE COMMENTS EVER MADE BY BAND TO CROWD (really trying to piss Rob off here) are

1) When Bobby tells a guy not to climb the fence "cuz it's gonna cut ya", then when the guy does anyway and complains, bob sez "well don't climb the fence then idiot!"

2) Phil starting the Boise show in '83 with "Citizens of Boise--submit or perish, you are a conquered people!", and

3)the whole band yelling at the guy at SPAC in 1985 climbing the tower to get back in his seat cuz there's 50,000 people waiting for him to do so. Real nice Stagger Lee follows.

How about "We need you to act like a mature responsible audience" (5/2/70) I think. Or "These New Yorker's, they'll beleive anything"

Man - there's a whole undercurrent of exasperation hidden just beneath a little phrase there. I may not know the details but I can sure as hell put myself in the situation without too much effort. If you want to talk outside the public forum you know where to find me. Yeah, yeah I know - I still owe you an email - I'm just making a gesture here.

Well, here it is Thursday, voting has come to a close. Of course, for some silly waste of time, I think that this whole exercise has brought it's own brand of random responses. Cover art? I love that thread. Fine Single Malts... very few things interest me more (but of course only in moderation).

So, without further ado, here we go...

A 4 way tie!!! Does that mean a 'finals' round with new round of voting on the top 4??

I think that I've always loved the cover art that showed less as more. I love Cats Under the Stars. Perfect.

I also love the Mouse back cover to WOTF.

Simple.

Wait a minute... I love Aoxomoxoa. And Mars Hotel, and American Beauty. I love Built to last. Oh, and how 'bout What a Long Strange Trip it's Been? Who can forget Europe '72?

I guess that there's really only one cover I truly hated. Yup, that's Go to Heaven.

By the way, I have all those old GD sheet music books. My Anthology fell apart so bad that I drilled holes in it, and mounted it in a 3 ring binder.

Once again, I find myself looking at the JGB anthology music more than any other. I second that emotion...
